Analysis of Eminem - Stan (Long Version) ft. Dido - Narrative video

A narrative video, which has two main characters and shows each of their lives which contrast massively.

Star Image - Eminem

This is Eminem’s video of ‘Stan’. Eminem is shown in two different ways; as his normal self and also as his star image. The star image way relates to Richard Dyers theory, which we had learnt about earlier in the term. The paradox it is related to is the first one, which suggests that the star must be “simultaneously ordinary and extraordinary for the consumer”. Although the other way he is shown is supposed to be his normal self it is also the other paradox, as the artist must be shown to be a normal person (absent). As we see he is writing a letter giving advice to Stan, which suggests his normality and care for other people.

Stan

The fan is clearly devoted to the artist Eminem as we see clearly by his basement, which suggests he really wants to meet him. Not only does he seem unsatisfied with life due to the fact that he lives for Eminem, the lyrics also suggest he is an angry person. Through the video and the lyrics Eminem gives a negative representation of this character to the audience.

Analysis of the video

Through the dark colour scheme and the depressing feeling we get a sense of tension in the relationship between Stan and his girlfriend. Eminem does not help the situation, as he does not reply to the letters that Stan sends. The gloomy surroundings suggest violence and Stan’s behaviour is aggressive.
