Evaluation Task 4: Who would be the target audience for your media product?

Who would be the target audience for your
 media product?

We all interviewed different ages of people:

  • Boys and Girls: 15-20 years old
  • Men and Women: 21-39 years old
  • Men and Women: 40+ years old
These were the questions we asked them:
  1. How old are you?
  2. What is your favourite genre of film
  3. What do you expect to see in a thriller?
  4. What do you like about thrillers?
  5. What is your favourite thriller and why?
  6. Would you watch a movie about my thriller?

From the videos it is clear that our film is popular to most ages both men and women. We did a range of interviews and every person from 15-20 were attracted to our film and also liked horror films due to suspense which is purely what our films relies on. Our film is very like taken and the female from the 21-39 group said her favourite film was Taken therefore she would enjoy our movie. Personally I think our primary audience is 15-30. Our secondary audience is 30+.
Here is an interview from another girl in my group. This is in the range of our primary audience.
This second video is our secondary audience.

Evaluation task 3: What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

If our film was created it would be quite low budget (around £20m) and could be a British independent film the idea and genre of the film is more like a Hollywood production as it is more like "the nutcase next door" idea which links more to a Hollywood movie.

    • Dreamworks SKG - This institution is based in California, America. The hub of Hollywood movies. It develops, produces and distributes films, video games and tv programmes. It has produced or distributed more than 10 films with box-office grosses totalling more than $100 million each. I researched this company and the movies they have produced such as The Lovely Bones and Disturbia and they are quite like my groups idea.

    THE LOVELY BONES
A 14-year-old girl is murdered by her neighbour. She tells the story from the place between Heaven and Earth, showing the lives of the people around her and how they have changed all while attempting to get someone to find her lost body.
This is quite similar to my group because the girl is about the same age and she is about to get murdered, you also see the movie from the girls perspective.

    DISTURBIA
After his father is killed in a car accident, he is placed under house-arrest for punching his Spanish teacher. He then occupies himself by spying on his neighbors. But one night, he witnesses what appears to be a murder going on in Mr. Turner's house.
This is quite similar to our movie from the perspective of the man. The man being Mr Turner as he will eventually murder this girl after enough torture.

    • Fox Searchlight Pictures - This is another Hollywood institution which could be interested in distributing our film as it has distributed many other thrillers before and this is the genre of my groups film. One of the movies similar to my groups is One Hour Photo.

    ONE HOUR PHOTO
This film is very similar to ours in the concept that a man becomes obsessed with a family and uses technology and pictures to find out more about them. The man in "One Hour Photo" also is very similar to our man physically, however the only thing different about him is the reason behind developing and keeping these photos.

Evaluation Task 2: In what ways does your media product represent particular social groups?

In what ways does your media product represent particular social groups?
This evaluation task is difficult to answer as we deliberately left the character unidentified in the opening sequence as we wanted to create tension with the audience so they could make their own assumptions before it being revealed in the rest of the film. However, there are many clues which you can place him in a social group by his clothing, through the mise en scene and the way he behaves. We did not use a particular stereotype to create our character however, throughout the development of the coursework the man developed a stereotype which is negative of a white middle class man as he has quite a twisted mind and this is clear from the fact that he is situated in a locked basement setting up a camera with children on the laptop screen.
It is clear that from the character's clothing that he is well off as he is in a suit which is ironed and clean. He has a white shirt on with a collar which highlights how smart he is and the process he is going through is one he takes seriously.
He is setting up a camera and knows what to do with his equipment suggests he knows what he is doing. Also he has locked his basement door implying he knows that he could get caught therefore takes precautions in the procedure of filming the kidnapped child.
We used a wild track whilst filming in the basement which has echoes and sounds quite airy which highlights the idea that the basement is big and the property he owns reflects his wealth.
Linking to the fact that this man is intelligent, it is not stated in the opening sequence but he was in fact a police officer who had access to a great deal of documents and passwords to many things therefore knows how to get around filming the girl and sending it to her father but without getting caught.
The basement which the filming happens is in his own home, it looks quite spacious and the equipment and laptop he has makes the assumption that he is fairly wealthy and takes pride in his belongings as he slowly unzips his equipment and being careful with the way he handles it.
To conclude, the character in our psychological thriller is a criminal. He shows many signs of a villain in a thriller for example, working on his own, not showing his identity, being a man who is well built and who has experienced something which has changed his view on life and the way he lives it.

Evaluation Task 1: In what ways does your media product of film use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

In what ways does your media product of film use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

    Editing: DAY 6

Today we felt we had completed our thriller however when watching it back we noticed issues with the final version. One problem was that on our keyhole shot, you could see the metal around the keyhole reflecting movement of the person shooting. They were moving and this issue was not something we could fix but we learnt from it and will be more careful next time. We also editing the size of the credits to make them smaller and move them into better places on the screen.

After we had done this and when we thought we were finished I noticed that one of the group members appeared in one of the shots; their face was hard to see but we could not ignore the problem. To fix this problem, we cropped out their face.

Finally, we looked over the spelling mistakes in the credits and found we had spelt 'Producer' wrong! I realise the importance of going through the credits now. After we had done all this we watched it again and we were happy with our final product!

    Editing: DAY 5

After we perfected each sound clip we added in a wild track which we filmed on shoot day in the basement. There was a lot of talking over the track so we edited it quite a lot but then it worked well. After we put the wild track on we listened to it again we heard a phone buzzing in the zip track so we had to take it out and put another zip track in that we had filmed.
After we finished the diagetic sound we added in some music to crate a more mysterious atmosphere. We listened to about 10 tracks some of which definately wouldn't have fitted but then I found a track that sounded fine and would fit but didn't sound brilliant. In order to perfect this I slowed down the music and it worked very well. Then we faded the sound in and also added in some higher notes so it wasn't a bore to listen to. After this session all the sound was perfected.

    Editing: DAY 4

After we cut our 3 and a half minute opening titles to 2 minutes we started doing the sound. We had to un stereo pair the two and also unlink the two as we had filmed with two microphones. We listened to and then we had to decide which microphone sounded better. After we did this we cut the other one and then paired the right one up. This was very time consuming but made is sound much better!

    Editing: DAY 3

We finished the pictorial edit in our eyes however, when we went over it and watched it, it felt so long and boring to watch so we decided to go through each clip and cut as soon as possible from both ends. We also cut out a few clips completely as they were not necessary. This process sped the whole thing up and when looking back I was so much happier with it cut quicker.
Once this was done we went through and started listening to the sound. When we were filming we used two microphones, one was on the camera however the other was its own sound set. This second microphone appeared to be much clearer and we then deleted the top sound as it was not needed. We sorted out 2 sound clips before the lesson was over, next lesson we will continue on the sound editing. DAY 3 done!!!!

    Shutter Island opening credits

"A film by Martin Scorsese" This suggests that he is well known other wise his name would not be mentioned. The producers are next, followed by screenplay. As it was a novel before this is sure to be mentioned after the screenplay. After this the main cast is mentioned

    • Ben Kingsley
    • Leonardo DiCaprio
Having these A-list actors suggests the movie will be good as their movies tend to be good. After this is the editor, then the music by. Finally the title of the film is shown "SHUTTER ISLAND" and then it goes into the movie.
