This video of Miley Cyrus's song Wrecking Ball concentrates on the sexuality of women. The star image in this video is the herself and sexuality. She is very provocative in her actions and what she is doing throughout the whole video. Miley is provoking herself as she is naked and very open about it. The lyrics are based on a relationship she had with Liam Hemsworth. They were engaged and then broke up. If you listen to the lyrics which are lip synched into the video they are very emotional and meaningful. There is not narrative story line and she just stays in this one room "wrecking" the room. The extreme close up at the beginning of the video is very demanding and Miley is the only person on screen. This causes the audience to concentrate on her and the pain that she is going through. The target market is possibly the fan base of Miley Cyrus as this video is a very acquired taste and possibly males too.
In this video by John Legend there isn't a narrative as such but more an autobiographical story about the relationship between himself and his wife. The video mostly concentrates on John Legend and his wife, they are the only two characters throughout the 5 minute video apart from at the end there is a home video put in of him and his wife at their real wedding. The star image that is being portrayed is the close relationship between John Legend and his wife, it is also the emotion he feels and his muse, his wife. Compared to some typical rap videos which include money, valuables, drug references and parties however this video portrays something completely different to this such as deep meaning and emotions. As it goes, this song was actually written for his wife and first performed at their wedding. Throughout there is lip synch but he is also playing the piano which creates a more real effect that he may be singing and demonstrates to the audience that he is musically gifted. I believe there is no inter textual links involved as it is purely based on him and her.
The location, which is in his home, in water and by the mountains, and the black and white effect create an emotional atmosphere but also allows the viewer to concentrate on the lyrics as there are no distractions.
Last week we took the Media AS exam and it went very well. This week I am starting A2. I am looking forward to a change from thrillers and the film industry to the music industry and music videos.
